Why Re-Sand Your Cutting Board?

I started this business for many reasons, one of them being a desire to reduce microplastics in the kitchen and shift toward natural materials. Wood cutting boards are sometimes avoided because they’re thought to be difficult to clean, but the properties of an unfinished board actually make cleanup simple. Wood is a natural material, so signs of use are completely normal—don’t be afraid to put your board to work! If those knife marks start to feel a little rough, a bit of elbow grease can bring your board back to life. I strongly believe in upcycling, repurposing, and repairing before buying new, which is why I share the steps to resand your cutting board—no secrets here. But if you’d rather sit back and relax, I also offer a re-sanding service.

How to re-sand your board

What You'll Need

-orbital/palm sander

-orbital sand paper ranging from 150-400 grit

-400 grit sheet of sandpaper

-shop rag or towel

-lots of patience (1-3 hours including dry time)

Initial Sanding

Depending on how deep the knife marks are (bread knives can be especially rough), start with a medium grit (150–180). Using your orbital sander, sand the flat faces until the marks disappear—focus on just the faces, not the rounded edges.

Working Up The Grits

What makes Vitali Woodworks boards unique is the care that goes into sanding. Whatever grit you started at, you'll work up to 400 (150,180,220,320,400). In between each grit of sandpaper you can draw a light pencil scribble across the face of the board to ensure you've sanded each spot enough.

Wet Sanding

Finally, once you've made your way to 400 grit, you start the wet sanding process. Wipe the surfaces of the board with a damp towel—no need to soak it. Allow the surface to dry to the touch; you'll notice the wood gets fuzzy from raising the grain. Next take a piece of 400-grit sandpaper and lightly hand-sand both the faces and the edges of the board. You'll repeat this process until the board remains smooth to the touch even after the surface dries. This can take 3-6 wetting and sanding cycles.

Don't Have the Tools?

Unfinished cutting boards are a labor of love to make. If you don't have the patience or tools, I can resand your board for you!
